Places to visit in and around Luton

Before going on holiday many customers prior to parking their car take the opportunity to visit the numerous attractions, which surround Luton airport and we outline below places of interest.

Bedforshire neatly divides into two distinct sections, based on the more industrial south centred on Luton and the agricultural north based on the market town of Bedford. Two other notable geographical features are The Great Ouse, which meanders through the peaceful countryside and the town of Bedford and the Chiltern hills to the south of the county.

One of the famous sons of area is John Bunyan who was born in Bedford in 1628 and was the author of Pilgrim’s Progress and many museums and walks around the town devote themselves to his life.

Also near Bedford is the internationally famous Woburn Abbey the home for the last 3 centuries of The Earls and Dukes of Woburn. This one of the best known and visited stately homes of England notable for its porcelain, silver and fine art collections, which also houses in its grounds Woburn Safari Park. For further animal life Whipsnade Zoo is not far away at Dunstable where you have the choice of driving your car through the 600 acres of Parkland or use one of the shuttle buses.

For aviation enthusiast Befordshire has many of the best museums, the Shuttleworth Collection near Biggleswade houses vintage aircraft many of which are the sole survivors of their type. A wonderful collection of vintage automobiles can also be seen. Cardington, London Colney and Hendon all have fine displays of vintage aircraft.

West Park Gardens is perhaps not as well known but has one of the most magnificent gardens in England having taken its inspiration from the great gardens of Versailles. Luton Hoo, Luton is a grand house with over 1000 acres of parklands designed by Capability Brown.

Other places of interest are:

Ceil Higgins Art gallery at Bedford
De Grey Mausoleum at Flitton
Houghton House
